There is an estimated population of 7,500 (or 10,000 if include unstudied areas), which has placed Cheetahs on the IUCN Red List category “Vulnerable”. Since the 1970s the population has declined by 30%, most in the last 3 generations. The decrease can be attributed to habitat loss, human conflict with livestock farmers and trade in live animals. Botswana is home to the second largest population in Africa, about 2000 animals or 20% of remaining cheetah.
